Bright Work Readiness Program
Young people, aged 16-25, from the Thamarrurr region choose to travel over 4000km to Bright in Northeast Victoria to participate in our Work Readiness Programs. These programs in Bright have trained over 100 young First Nations leaders in workplace readiness, sustainability, life skills, and leadership across a variety of workplaces.
Many of the participants have returned to Wadeye to work in local businesses. Others have taken up key roles within Thamarrurr Youth; graduated high school; now attend University and TAFE courses; traineeships at the local Bright high school; and are even starting their own businesses.
Our Partnership with Dumu Balcony Cafe
Thamarrurr Youth has partnered with the Dumu Balcony Café since its opening in 2015. ‘Dumu’ is the word for Black Duck in the local Dhudhuroa language and, like the animal, provides a welcoming and supportive space to learn. Whilst working at the café, the trainees engage with the Bright community and develop workplace readiness and life skills.
Youth Leadership
The Elders of the Thamarrurr Region saw young people as essential to the future of the Thamarrurr Region. Our programs therefore encourage young people to challenge themselves by undertaking new experiences and participating in leadership camps. These camps teach governance and leadership skills relevant to both worlds, enabling young people to step into leadership positions with the ability to make self-determined decisions for the benefit of themselves, their culture and community.
